Thursday’s Stocks to Watch – Latest Updates on DAL, PIR, PNC and STX

New York, New York – April 15th, 2016 – U.S. markets crept higher Thursday on better-than-expected earnings results from the Banking sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out a 0.08 percent gain to close up 2.86 percent year-to-date, while the S&P 500 Index increased 0.02 percent to close up 1.91 percent year-to-date. Additionally, the Labor Department reported jobless claims dropped by 13,000 to 253,000 in the week ended April 9th, equaling the lows seen in March, which was the lowest since November 1973.

“When you get sectors that have been underperforming catching up, that speaks to the overall breadth of the market,” said Rob Bernstone, managing director in equity trading at Credit Suisse. “It’s certainly healthy,” he said.

Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE: DAL) shares gained 0.96 percent to close at $48.50 a share Thursday. The stock traded between $48.27 and $49.80 on volume of 15.90 million shares traded. Delta Air Lines reported earnings of $946.0 million for the first quarter of 2016, an increase of 27.0 percent year-over-year. The company's operating revenue for the quarter decreased 1.5 percent year-over-year. Shares of Delta Air Lines have fallen approximately 4.0 percent year-to-date, but have rallied roughly 1.25 percent in the past month.

Pier 1 Imports Inc. (NYSE: PIR) shares dropped 5.86 percent to close at $6.91 a share Thursday. The stock traded between $6.28 and $7.47 on volume of 7.86 million shares traded. The company reported revenue of $542.3 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016, which topped analysts’ expectations of $534 million. Shares of Pier 1 Imports have gained approximately 35.0 percent year-to-date and are up roughly 5.0 percent in the past month.

PNC Financial Services Group Inc. (NYSE: PNC) shares declined 0.56 percent to close at $84.69 a share Thursday. The stock traded between $82.69 and $85.89 on volume of 3.76 million shares traded. The company reported a net income of $943 million for the first quarter of 2016, a decrease of 5.7 percent year-over-year. Shares of PNC Financial Services Group have fallen approximately 11.0 percent year-to-date and are down roughly 1.0 percent in the past month.

Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ: STX) shares fell 20.10 percent to close at $27.11 a share Thursday. The stock traded between $26.93 and $29.85 on volume of 48.44 million shares traded. The company announced that it now expects to report revenues of $2.6 billion and non-GAAP gross margin of 23% in the third quarter of fiscal 2016, down from its previous guidance of $2.7 billion and 25.6 percent. Shares of Seagate Technology have fallen approximately 26.0 percent year-to-date and are down roughly 23.0 percent in the past month.
